What you pick up on the grocery store shelf has an impact as real as a poacher’s bullet or a game warden’s protection for these precious creatures. It all hinges on a popular, but little known, ingredient. It’s palm oil and is the most widely produced edible vegetable oil in the world, and with good reason. With an attractively long shelf life and semi-solid state at room temperature, palm oil has rapidly become the ingredient of choice in packaged food like cookies, chocolate, potato chips, and bread – as well as shampoo, lotion, laundry soap, and a multitude of other common products. To meet the dramatic rise in demand for this popular oil, tropical forests have been cleared and burned leading to staggering loss of rare wildlife and creating tragic health problems in humans from catastrophic levels of smoke.
