The modern era brought enormous change to the western world. Art and artists were not only experimenting with new forms of expression, but believed art could expand our spiritual connection, freeing us from the restrictions imposed by nation, social class, gender and religion. This lecture will explore not only the expansiveness of various artistic approaches but also illustrate how art was perceived as both unifier and liberator.
